Why Is My Air Conditioner Spitting Water?

Water leaking from air conditioner

Few issues are more frustrating to deal with than a water leak in your home — especially when that leak comes from an unexpected source like your air conditioner. An AC unit can leak for a number of different reasons, and it’s important to understand when a leak is easily repairable versus when it requires expert attention.

AirCo has the HVAC technicians you need to keep catastrophic water damage from entering your home. Contact our team to schedule the emergency AC repairs you need today!

Common Causes of AC Leaks

Air conditioners are constantly contending with water, condensing moisture from the air in your home as part of its refrigeration process. As your unit cools your home, it must first dehumidify the air, which requires it to collect moisture on its evaporator coils. Usually, this water will drip off into the condensate drain system, where it’s safely carried away from your home. However, there are times when the water is going where it’s intended to go. This usually occurs in the following scenarios:

  • Clogged Condensate Drain: This is one of the most common reasons for air conditioner leaks, and it happens to be one of the easiest problems that homeowners can check for on their own. Dust, dirt, and other debris can clog the drainage system that carries water from your AC and away from your home. When this happens, it can cause your system to leak.
  • Damaged Drain Pan: If you inspected your condensate line and it’s free of blockages, your drain pan may be damaged. This is the area that catches the excess water dripping from the unit’s evaporator system. Inspect the pan for cracks and other damage to see if this is the source of spillage. NOTE: If there is water in this drain pan, there’s a problem with the drainage system. This needs immediate attention.
  • Dirty Air Filter: Your system’s air filter should be changed before it becomes restrictive to airflow. Failure to keep the air filter clean and clear may stifle the airflow in your air conditioner, creating a drop in pressure. This drop in pressure can cause your system to freeze. When this happens, the unit will shut down, the frost will melt, and the system will leak.
  • Refrigerant Leak: In the worst-case scenario, you may have a refrigerant leak. This causes the same type of damage as a clogged air filter; however, the proper fix for this problem requires a skilled HVAC technician to resolve.

Water Issues With Window AC Units & Ductless Mini-Split Systems

If you don’t have a central air conditioning system in place, you may have a portable unit installed in your window. These window AC units are notorious for spitting water, but this is normal as long as the water is coming out of the back part of the system that protrudes from your home.

Usually if you notice that your window AC unit has started spitting out water inside, it means the unit is tilting too far inward or that the sling fan has been damaged. Try tilting the window unit outward to see if this resolves the problem.
